Spectrum Astro Selects LMS Test.Lab to Support New Satellite Test Facility

Datum der Pressemitteilung11 Sep 2003

LMS Test.Lab software and multiple LMS SCADAS III hardware systems to be deployed in new Acoustics Test Facility

LMS International announced that Spectrum Astro (Gilbert, AZ) has selected LMS Test.Lab to test and qualify high performance satellite systems and subsystems. Spectrum Astro is an aerospace prime contractor and systems integrator that designs and develops high performance satellites for space missions.  LMS Test.Lab software and multiple LMS SCADAS III hardware systems will be deployed in the new Acoustics Test Facility being designed and constructed by ASRC Aerospace Corporation in Spectrum Astro’s “Factory of the Future”, a new state-of-the art satellite development center.

Satellite design involves meeting rigorous requirements, such as the ability to operate for several decades with temperatures that plunge to as low as –160°C. The payload must be able to withstand the pre-launch, launch and flight path loading. The LMS Test.Lab multi-channel vibration control and data acquisition systems will support Spectrum Astro in testing the responses to the variety of “actual” loads that assemblies will experience during their real missions. LMS Test.Lab constantly matches the test assembly against predefined load profiles by means of a closed-loop system and herewith continuously protects the test assembly against permanent damage.

LMS systems to be delivered to ASRC Aerospace for systems integration in the Spectrum Astro ATF combine a variety of LMS Test.Lab modules for vibration control, data reduction and modal analysis, with multiple LMS SCADAS III hardware systems that count up to 160 data acquisition channels. The vibration control system accurately controls specific load excitation schedules in real time and in closed-loop mode for random, sine and shock testing. The Data reduction system will allow for real time processing of all required functions with the ability to simultaneously record time data.

“We have decided to implement LMS Test.Lab because of its ease of use and tight integration, delivering optimal performance, minimizing equipment cost and training requirements,” commented Scott O’Leary, Spectrum Astro Director of Facilities. “The capability of the LMS systems to perform real-time processing over several hundred channels will allow us to characterize assemblies in greater detail, raising the safety of the test and delivering reliable test results.”

Filip Pintelon, Corporate Vice-President and General Manager Test Division at LMS, stated, “LMS looks forward to cultivating a tight relationship with Spectrum Astro in the launch of their new facilty. The LMS Test.Lab solution delivers the accurate measurement capabilities, the performance and the required safety to support Spectrum Astro in performing their mission-critical satellite testing and qualification.”

Spectrum Astro’s new, ultra-modern Factory of the Future complex is under construction near their current Gilbert Headquarters location, and is scheduled for completion by February 2004. America’s most modern satellite facility will accommodate up to 20 medium-sized satellites simultaneously in various stages of manufacture, test and integration. The factory’s 62-foot high bay will support final integration and test of a large satellite of up to 5000 kg (11,000 lbs).
