LMS Virtual.Lab Selected by Airbus to Support Aircraft Design

Datum der Pressemitteilung11 Feb 2003

LMS Virtual.Lab decreases lead-time for building Finite Element (FE) models of derivative aircraft

The Airbus Loads and Aero-elastics division has selected LMS to develop functionalities within LMS Virtual.Lab that will decrease the lead-time needed for building Finite Element (FE) models of derivative aircraft. The new LMS morphing solution quickly generates simulation models from an existing FE mesh of an assembly, enabling structural analyses at anytime from the very beginning of the configuration selection process. Directives to Airbus designers will be based on in-depth investigations of numerous variants of existing assemblies, widening the boundaries of the design space.

Today, the long process of meshing the entire aircraft happens relatively late in the design process. But, within LMS Virtual.Lab, analysts will be able to use variants of the Finite Element (FE) models of existing aircraft to quickly modify the existing mesh, after which they can analyze the performance (loads, dynamics, etc.) of alternative designs much earlier in the process.

Airbus engineers will use LMS Virtual.Lab to examine a variety of major design concepts and re-configurations of aircraft - at any point in the future project phase. Engineers will no longer have to go through the expensive mesh creation process each time that a new variant calls for a change in the structure. Using meshes made from the new models, they can quickly and accurately analyze the performance of a variant with a longer fuselage, or a new geometry of the wing. Critical decisions about the type and location of engines, the shape of engine pylons to be used, or the shape and length of the fuselage, will be based on up-to-date and in-depth analyses.

Airbus expects that the LMS solution will contribute to improve their dynamic model building process of aircraft derivatives, in particular the early design stage of this process.

LMS Virtual.Lab is based on the acclaimed Dassault Systèmes V5 application architecture, including V5’s outstanding user interface and CAE data handling and modeling capabilities. Since Airbus already employs CATIA V5 from Dassault Systèmes, it will benefit from the seamless integration between CATIA V5 and LMS Virtual.Lab.

About LMS Virtual.Lab

LMS Virtual.Lab is the world’s first integrated software environment for the functional performance engineering of critical design attributes, such as noise and vibration, ride & handling, comfort, safety & durability. Fully associative, it automatically links to leading CAD and CAE tools, captures the process flow to better manage the analysis sequence, and enables engineers to refine their designs in virtual space not just at the component level - but also at the sub-assembly and full system level where most performance problems occur.  By eliminating unnecessary file transfers, model and data redundancies, and automating the analysis process, LMS Virtual.Lab dramatically increases the time available for value-added engineering. For the user interface and CAE data modelling, LMS Virtual.Lab bases itself on the acclaimed Dassault Systèmes V5 application architecture.
